Recall that the decibel scale
is a reference-based scale. For the dB SPL scale the reference point is
a specific sound pressure measurement (i.e., 20 microPascals ). To account
for specific characteristics of the human auditory system (which will be
reviewed shortly), we will use a decibel scale called the Hearing Level,
or HL, scale to describe pure tone threshold levels. The HL scale uses average
