dB HL Tutorial

In addition to the dB HL scale, there exists two additional dB scales that play a role in the basic assessment of an individual's hearing. The first of these is referred to as the Sensation Level (or SL) scale. The reference point for this scale is the individual's actual pure tone threshold. This scale becomes useful when we need to assess some aspect of our patient's auditory capabilities at a specific level above their individual threshold.

The final dB scale of interest to us from a clinical perspective is the Effective masking Level or EM scale. We will address this dB scale in a subsequent tutorial.
