As you progress throught
your training program it will become increasingly important for you to
understand the relationship between the various dB scales that are commonly
used in the field of hearing health care. One of the important aspects
of understanding these relationships involves the ability to convert from
one dB scale to another. Converting from the SPL to the HL scale is actually
a very straightforward task based on our definitions for the HL scale.
Recall that the references point for the HL scale is the average threshold
of normal hearing and that these values, shown again below, have been
defined in ANSI S3.6 - 1989. Thus, 0 dB HL at 1000 Hz is equal to 7.5
dB SPL.
