dB HL Tutorial

As you progress throught your training program it will become increasingly important for you to understand the relationship between the various dB scales that are commonly used in the field of hearing health care. One of the important aspects of understanding these relationships involves the ability to convert from one dB scale to another. Converting from the SPL to the HL scale is actually a very straightforward task based on our definitions for the HL scale. Recall that the references point for the HL scale is the average threshold of normal hearing and that these values, shown again below, have been defined in ANSI S3.6 - 1989. Thus, 0 dB HL at 1000 Hz is equal to 7.5 dB SPL.
