Since our goal with pure
tone audiometry is to report the individual's pure tone threshold
relative to normal values, a sensible alternative to the SPL scale
for this task would be to use a decibel scale that uses the average
normal threshold as the reference point. This is the basis for the
dB Hearing Level (or HL) scale.
